Buffalo Rifle Match
January 15, 2012
The nasty weather promised by the forecasters began right on schedule, about 1:30 in the afternoon. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. The day started with favorable conditions and wind which was easily managed by both spotters and shooters. This enabled some great scores. Ron VandenBrink continued to creep up on the elusive "perfect score" of 35. Ron was perfect through the first six targets and his first three shots at the offhand target. He finished the day with a personal
best of 33/3 for first place. Paul Dowell also had a great day taking second place at 30/2. Toby Chisler was third shooting 29/2. George Hudak was back after an absence of several months finishing fourth with 29/0; he will be back in top form very soon. Bill Gloor took fifth place scoring 27/2. Frigid North winds were gusting to 20 mph as the competitors finished the offhand target. Not a soul stuck around to clean their rifles at the range…
2012 Froze to Death Match
January 1, 2012
The 2012 ‘Froze to Death” match featured nice weather, great food and few participants. The low turnout did not dampen the shooters’ enthusiasm as it meant there was a ton of goodies for each to eat. The half-silhouette match was won by Patrick Menahan with a score of 15. 2nd place went to George Grossi with 11, 3rd was a tie between Bill Gloor and Ron VandenBrink with scores of 11. Rick Smith shot a 9 and Wyatt Sims had 4. Ron and Bill decided not
to have a shoot-off so there would be more time to munch on the food. Before the traditional “Bison Blast” everyone consumed sausages made of elk, deer and antelope, lots of cheese, croissants, chips and salsa. Dessert was “Manly Man” cupcakes featuring 4 kinds of chocolate. Patrick and Rick won the Pig Blast by taking down 4 pigs at 300 meters with 10 shots; all done offhand, of course. Instead of the usual rush to get indoors and thaw out, the guys basked in the sunshine while cleaning
their guns and finishing off what remained of the 2 dozen cupcakes. Ya shoulda been there!
Buffalo Rifle Match
December 18, 2011
The weather forecast was partially correct. The wind was blowing right into the shooters’ faces at about 15 mph as the match began. It never warmed up as promised by the weather forecasters, but that did not stop people from having one of the best days of shooting this writer has ever witnessed. Ron VandenBrink and Bill Gloor were perfect through the first six targets and many others shot 4 or 5 perfect targets. Some fine groups were shot as well with many
capable of being covered by a coffee can lid; not bad for iron sights at 280-700 yards. Ron won posting a 32 with 2 offhand and 5 on the 692 yard buffalo. There was a 4 way tie at 30 hits, attesting to the fine day of shooting. George Grossi came in 2nd with 30 total, 3 offhand and 5 hits on the buffalo. Paul Dowell held down 3rd with a score of 30, 3 offhand and 4 on the buffalo. Rob Lab was 4th at 30 with 2 offhand. Bill Gloor took 5th with 30 no offhand and 5 on the buffalo.
Well done, everyone!
Buffalo Rifle Match
November 20, 2011
A cold day with flat light greeted the competitors. Flat light helped the shooters see the targets well. Ron VandenBrink used his 45-100 to win the match with a score of 30 hits and two offhand hits. Bill Gloor took 2nd with 26 and Wyatt Sims placed third with 18.

October Matches
October 2nd Black Powder Silhouette Match – With only two shooters showing up the drama surrounding the battle for 1st place was intense. When the smoke cleared and the scores were tallied, Wyatt Sims was declared the winner with a score of 16 out of a possible 40. George Hudak, with a score of 14 conceded defeat without calling for any recounts or claims of dangling chads.
October 16th monthly Buffalo Rifle match – Three shooters and one spotter arrived at the range and decided to go ahead with the match. Spotter Ron VandenBrink added up the hits and called the finishers in this order. George Hudak 30 with 2 offhand, Wyatt Sims had 27/2, Mark Scott (winner of the 2011 Montana 1000 Yard Match) 24/0.
Buffalo Rifle Match
September 18, 2011
A low turnout did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors, each of whom had some interesting firearms. Winner Bob Engelbach (28 with 1 offhand) used an original Stevens 44 ½ 45-90 with paper patched bullets. 2nd place finisher Jim Finch (21/1) used the 45-110 his kids gave him for a retirement gift and Wyatt Sims (9) tested out his elk load in his original 1886 Winchester lever rifle chambered for the 40-65. Wyatt said he wasn’t worried about
elk hunting despite his low score in the match; he is not planning to take any 700 yard shots.
Buffalo Rifle Match
August 21, 2011
The
cloudless sky that greeted the shooters held promise. Conditions were
great with one shooter reporting he cranked 2 minutes lf left wind into
his sight and then didn’t have to change it all day. Ron VandenBrink
had a perfect score until the offhand target where he dropped 3
targets. Wyatt Sims scored fifth with his original 1886 lever action
rifle. The top five finishers were Ron with 32 and 2 offhand, 2nd place
went to George Hudak with 29, Rick Bouchard in 3rd with 26, George
Grossi’s 23 was good enough for 4th, and Wyatt Sims rounded out the top
five with 20. Nice shooting gentlemen.
Quigley Refugee Match
June 19, 2011
The words "Quigley match canceled" traveled around in cyberspace faster than a 300 grain bullet fired from a 45-110. Once the initial shock wore off, several local clubs, including YRC, decided to hold Quigley Refugee Matches so people who had traveled great distances could at least shoot in a match. We had visitors from as far as Virginia. It is rumored the Aussies & New Zealand contingents shot at Broadus or Baker. Several YRC members pulled
their gear off
the line to spot & score ensuring there was enough room for our guests. When the scores were tallied there was some excitement with 2 shooters tied at 25 and 3 tied at 24! The ties for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places were decided by most hits on the offhand and 692 yard buffalo targets. 1st place went to Ron VandenBrink with 26/3 offhand. 2nd Vern Nash 24/2 offhand and /3 buffalo, 3rd place George Grossi with 25/2/2. 4th place Keifer Lewis 24/3/4. 5th Clint Stagner 24/2/4.
Buffalo Rifle Match
May 15, 2011
"May the wind be always at your back" from the old Irish blessing was true most of the day for the buffalo gunners. (Except, of course, for the times when the wind shifted to the left or right along the firing line.) Paul Dowell must have found a four leaf clover which helped him unravel the zephyrs and win the match posting a score of 30 with 2 offhand. Bill Gloor was nipping at Paul's heels with a score of 29/3. Bob Engelbach finished 3rd with 28/3. 4th place went to Jim Finch, 27/1. The illustrious
Wyatt Sims
rounded out the top five with a score of 26/2. There will be no local match in June; see you at the Quigley!
Buffalo Rifle Match
April 17, 2011
A look outside early in morning of match day convinced many it was a good to stay home, warm and dry. Boy, where they wrong. The day turned “nice” with only the customary fickle wind direction changes to torment the competitors. Bob Engelbach demonstrated the accuracy of the High Wall rifle and paper patched bullets with a winning score of 31, 3 offhand. George Hudak used three different loads and still came in 2nd with 29, 3 offhand. Wyatt Sims had a good day with 27, 2 offhand.
George Grossi took 4th with a good showing on the offhand target scoring 26 and 4. Ron VandenBrink had an off day, taking 5th with 26, 1 offhand. Fine shooting on a great Montana spring day.
Buffalo Rifle Match
March 20, 2011
The day dawned sunny and calm, raising hopes of some high scores. Someone said that out loud with the predictable result. As the 1st squad prepared to shoot, temperature dropped and wind began, and a fickle wind it was. Conditions proved no hindrance to Rob Lab who was perfect, 30 of 30, through the first six targets. Then the offhand target gave Rob fits. Wyatt Sims and Bill Gloor were no threat with their originals, 1886 Winchester lever gun and 1884 Trapdoor, respectively. 1st Rob Lab with 30/0
offhand, 2nd George Grossi 28/3, 3rd George Hudak 28/0, 4th Paul Dowell 27/0 and 5th Ron VandenBrink 26/0.
Buffalo Rifle Match
January 16, 2011
The day started with low clouds and high winds. At starting time, the out-of-towners outnumbered the locals 3 to 1. Bozeman, Harlowton, Livingston and Logan were all represented. The low clouds hid the sun and high winds caused tears in the eyes of competitors. Most had a hard time seeing the targets, some admitted to aiming by Braille. Tobi Chisler’s performance at the offhand target in the gusty wind was impressive with 4 hits in a group small enough to cover with your hand; his 5th shot was just off the
target. When the smoke cleared, only 1 YRC member, George Grossi, made it into the top 5. Scores: 1st - Tobi Chisler with 28 hits and 4 offhand. 2nd - Rob Labs 28 & 2 offhand. 3rd - Clint Stagner 24 & 3. 4th - Paul Dowell 22 & 1. 5th - George Grossi 18 & 2. A fine performance in very difficult conditions. Well done gentlemen.
2011 Froze to Death Match
January 1, 2011
Frigid air and strong winds combined to treat this year’s Froze to Death participants to -25F wind chill. Eight brave souls started the half-silhouette match, but only three finished. Ron VandenBrink won; Huck Hutson took second, leaving Wyatt Sims in sole possession of last place. Much more interesting than the scores were some of the mishaps befalling the other competitors. There were shells frozen half-way into chambers, lenses falling from glasses and frost on spectacles that refused to melt! George
Grossi showed up too late to shoot, but had warm food in the car. His arrival started a stampede for the clubhouse where the survivors thawed themselves and their food items.
Buffalo Rifle Match
December 2010
Shooters at the December match were greeted by chilly air and a sun that seemed to delight in darting behind clouds as the triggers were squeezed. Patchy snow on the back berms helped targets disappear in rifle sights. Nobody cared. Not even when the wind became fickle. We were having fun. Wyatt Sims used his original 1886 Winchester lever gun in 40-65; a gift from his grandfather, a long, long time ago when Wyatt was 15. After the last round was
fired, Bill Gloor ended up in 1st place with a 24. Wyatt Sims finished 2nd at 11, and Paul Hoeft, a new shooter from Powell, was 3rd with 9 hits.
Remember the Froze To Death match on January 1. Shooters are urged to bring food suitable to the occasion such as chili, hot soup, sausage & cheese, etc. Bring your own heat source and a supply of one dollar bills for the side matches.
Buffalo Rifle Match
September 2010
The September match day for the buffalo gunners began with foggy skies which did nothing to dampen the spirits of those assembled. Everyone expected the sun to burn off the haze by starting time and that’s exactly what happened. The sunshine and light winds created conditions for some great scores. 1st place went to George Hudak with a score of 32/2 offhand. Bill Gloor was 2nd with 30/3. A tie for 3rd and 4th places was broken by the most hits on the 692 yard target;
George Grossi secured 3rd place with 28/1/and 4 buffalo while Clint Stogner came in 4th scoring 28/1/3. Jim Finch rounded out the top 5 having posted a score of 25/2.
Buffalo Rifle Match
August 2010
It was good to get back to the range after the annual two month hiatus. We do not shoot in June so all can attend the Quigley and we let the State Games hold sway in July. The first and second place winners were unaffected by the two month layoff, the rest of us were a little rusty. The first 5 place finishers were Mark Scott with 30 of 35 possible, George Hudak was 2nd with 29, followed by Bill Gloor 24, Ron VandenBrink 23, and Jim Finch with 22 hits.
Buffalo Rifle Match
May 16, 2010
The May contestants were treated to beautiful shirt
sleeve weather punctuated by light and variable winds. Everyone seemed pleased
to get a little sunburn after a long, cold and overcast spring. Top scores were
Ron VandenBrink with 28/2 offhand, Dick Bouchard 25/2, Mark Scott 23/1 and
George Grossi 21/1. (Bill Gloor’s
30/3 score was disqualified because he used two guns in order to use up some old
ammunition.)
Buffalo Rifle Match
April 18, 2010
A fair April morning promised high scores until someone
(not to be named) mentioned how nice a day it was going to be. That was all it took for the fickle
winds to commence blowing from all different directions and speeds. Conditions were just tricky enough to
keep that perfect score of 35 beyond reach. 1st place, Ron VandenBrink
30/3 offhand, 2nd George Hudak 29/2, 3rd Harvey Blehm
27/2/5 buffalo, 4th Paul Dowell 27/2/3 and Dave Mueller was
5th with 27/1.
Buffalo Rifle Match
February 21, 2010
The February match was proof that "good things come to those who wait." The
morning started out with enough snow in the air to obscure the targets. But, the optimistic shooters had enough
tales to share that everyone hung around until the squall passed. The delay allowed a few more out of town
shooters to arrive and the match got under way at about 10:30. A quick head count tallied 5 locals and 10
competitors from Livingston, Big Timber, Bozeman and Harlowton. Fortunately for the home crowd, a "local" - Mac
Clark, came out on top hitting 28 of 35 possible, with 4 offhand. In 2nd place was Rob Labs, 27-2;
3rd was Paul Dowell, 25-2; 4th went to Dick DeBernardis at 24-5; and Jim Rinehart finished
5th with 19-3. Your patience paid off; well
done, gentlemen!
Buffalo Rifle Match
January 17, 2010
Good weather, relatively speaking, brought the shooters
out of the woodwork from as far away as Logan and Harlowton. By match time there were 20 competitors
lined up and raring to go. Some fine scores were posted with the top 5 finishers as follows: Dave Mueller 32/5 offhand, Toby Chrisler 30/0, Paul Dowell 29/2, George Grossi 28/2, and Elwyn Brunner
27/4.
Buffalo Rifle Match
December 20, 2009
The Christmas week match started with reasonable
temperatures and, dare I say, no wind.
Of course, that all changed when it started to rain. Two gents came down
from Bozeman to shoot with us. After they figured out the Acton Highway wasn’t
Rimrock Road they managed to back track in time to join the fun. Targets were hard to see against the
snow, but that didn’t prevent the most incredible display of offhand shooting
we’ve seen at these matches. 3 of
the last 4 shooters each had 3 offhand hits and Wyatt Sims went a perfect 5 for
5! Great shooting, guys. The top five scores were Dave Mueller
30, Bill Gloor 27, Clint Stogner 23, Wyatt Sims 21, and George Grossi 18. Merry Christmas to one and
all.
Buffalo Rifle Match
September 20, 2009
The September match provided the contestants with the typical variable wind conditions which kept the spotters on their toes and shooters second guessing wind shifts. Although no one broke 30, everyone agreed that their skills had been sufficiently put to the test. Top five finishers were George Grossi with 28 and 3 off hand, Bill Gloor – 28 and 2 offhand, Ron Vendenbrink – 26, Wyatt Sims – 23 and Clint Stagner – 17.

Uncharacteristically cool weather greeted 15 shooters for the first match since “Quigley.” Everything went smoothly until the last target. 7th Annual Froze-to-Death Match
January 1, 2008
This year's Froze-to-Death Match welcomed party-goers with a 9 degree Fahrenheit morning which warmed into a beautiful 35 degree day with plenty of sunshine and lots of good food and hot beverages. Pat Menahan (Colstrip) tripped into town with Rick Smith to capture top honors in the Silhouette Match. The team of Bill Gloor and Mac Clark teamed up to take the off-hand Pig Blast, While Ivor's Ding-a-ling presented a big challenge at about 500 yards, but was finally nailed (only once) by Rick Smith of Forsyth.

Buffalo Rifle Match
October 15, 2006
September brought much-needed rains to our corner of the
world, but forced cancellation of the September gong match. October, however,
provided better weather, and 11 shooters took to the firing line to test their
“metal”. Notable for the day was the top score by Dave Mueller, a relative
newcomer to our matches, who shot a new range record of 33. Dave hit all shoots
for score on all targets except the offhand target, where he hit 3 of 5. Also
notable was the fine score turned in by Bill Gloor with his original Trapdoor
Springfield, hitting 26 of 35. Nice shooting guys! Here are the results for the

Buffalo Rifle Match
August 20, 2006
The Buffalo Rifle Matches have returned after the Summer
hiatus; 15 shooters turned out for the August match, and several new faces gave
the game a try, including Tiny Metcalf and K.T. Monson. Welcome, guys! The day
was warm and sunny, with enough tricky YRC wind thrown in to keep everyone on
their toes. The top five scores for the day were as follows:

1. Doug LaMont
2. Dave Mueller

Buffalo Rifle Match
May 21,2006
19 Shooters joined the fun at the May Buffalo
Rifle Match, the last before the summer hiatus (the next scheduled
match is in August), and we all enjoyed Mother Nature at her best.
Fine weather - pleasant temperatures, sunshine and hardly enough
breeze to blow the smoke away - made for excellent conditions.
Congratulations to George Grossi and Jim Finch, both of whom shot a
score of 22 with original Trapdoors, and to Dave Mueller shooting
black powder at this match for the first time (fourth place score of
28). The peal of ringing steel presided over the Church of Immaculate
Accuracy (= scores were high).

April 15, 2006
A beautiful Spring day brought out the faithful and the fair-weather shooters alike for the April Buffalo Rifle Match. Temperatures reached into the 70’s and many went home with their first taste of sunburn at the end of the day. Winds were light to moderate and shifting. Nearly 20 shooters competed for top honors, and the top five spots were filled as follows:

Buffalo Rifle Match
February and March, 2006
The weather dealt a cruel hand for both the February and March matches. The scheduled Sunday in February turned out to be a bitterly cold day, and even the normally intrepid regulars stayed away. The only two undaunted shooters were Wyatt Sims and shooting partner Bill Graves. (Bill flew out from Portland for the match, if you’re wondering why anyone would have bothered to shoot, given the conditions). Match Director George Grossi kindly stayed to spot and score, and the two hardy shooters battled it out; the
day ended up with Bill shooting a 21 of 35 and Wyatt scoring 15. Congratulations, Bill & Wyatt for sweeping the top two places!
As for the scheduled March contest, Mother Nature again got the upper hand, dumping a good bit of the heavy wet snow March is famous for, leaving the range too soggy to drive on for target painting, etc. (I’m not even sure if we could have seen the 700 yd target through the falling snow!) A hasty rescheduling allowed us to put a match on the following Sunday, March 26th. Mom Nature again tried to test our resolve, dealing out strong gusting and shifty winds, spitting rain and a temporary dip in the temperature
pattern. However, a good turn out of enthusiastic shooters resulted in another fun match. Here are the top four shooters from this event:

Buffalo Rifle Match
January 15, 2006
Swirling winds kept shooters from feeling too comfortable, but the temperature was very moderate for January, and the threatened rain/snow mix never materialized. January’s Buffalo Rifle Match saw 13 participants testing their skills against the long range steel targets, and some very good scores were posted, considering the conditions. Muddling through without the expert guidance of Match Director George Grossi (home with the flue), several new
faces and some
personal bests made the day notable. Results from the match:

This year’s Froze-to-Death Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette Match turned out to be a mild and pleasant outing, unlike the Buffalo Rifle Match in December. With pots of chili, black bean soup and stew, as well as homemade brownies and pecan pie, there were rewards for everyone who participated. It was fantastic to see how everyone pitched in to help make this shoot work and ensure that it was fun for all. A big thanks to all the participants. Buffalo Rifle Match
December 18, 2005
The December Buffalo Rifle Match was plenty cold; many felt it would prove a good “warm-up” to the 5th Annual Froze-to-Death Match on New Year’s Day. The thermometer was in the single digits and the breeze kept the cold air circulating nicely so that no one was in danger of overheating. Despite the weather, a dozen shooters with more ammunition than sense enjoyed another fun, friendly competition. The top four shooters were as follows:

1. Mac Clark 2. Doug LaMont 3. Ivor Danielson 4. Bill Graves

While some regulars were out chasing Montana’s wild game, 12 shooters took to the line at the Buffalo Gong range on Sunday, October 16 to test their skills (and luck!) for the monthly Buffalo Rifle match. Good shooting was the order of the day, and scores were high across the field of competitors: the results of the match were as follows:

Buffalo Rifle Match
September 18, 2005
Twelve intrepid shooters braved the sunny, 70 degree weather on Sunday, September 18 for the monthly Buffalo Gong Match. Winds were light to moderate, and characteristically unpredictable, which probably accounted for the modest scores. Competition for top score was tight, with a three-way tie for first, the tie being broken by hits on the offhand target. Notable for the day, Jim Tryon of Absaroka showed up with a newly purchased Remington Rolling Block in .45-70 and fired a personal best of 19; and Tyler
LaMont shot his first ever match and turned in a respectable score of 17, with the help of his Dad's trusty Sharps (and excellent loads). The top scores for the day were as follows:

2. George Grossi

Buffalo Rifle Match
August 21, 2005
This months match was attended by 15 shooters with fine weather. Match winner was Doug Lamont with a 26. Taking 2nd and 3rd were a father and son team - Wes and Mark Scott. Wes came down from Glasgow to beat his son by one point!
We would like to welcome anyone with a traditional black powder cartridge rifle to come out and shoot.
We would also like to thank Ron Bender and Travis Shilling for their work on the target berms.

Feb. 20 2005
A hazy but
pleasant February day made for a very interesting match. Ties were the order
of the day and offhand hits were the determining factor for placing. Among
our out of town guests was Butch Ulsher a past National silhouette winner.
One of our regular shooters managed to tie him and best him in the offhand
for first place. A bunch of us were just behind and any of us would have won

Buffalo Rifle Match
Jan.
16,2005
An extremely cold match faced a hearty band of shooters on a zero
degree day. All that kept us there was the thought that 130 years ago the
buffalo hunters for the railroad would not have dared to say it was
too cold to get meat for 800 hungry workers. We shot an abbreviated match
with 10 shots at the buffalo and 10 at the offhand target. Bill Gloor
accomplished a seldom done feat by hitting all 10 of the buffalo in a
row. (at 728 yards!)
