Our Montana State Varmint Championships were held on the 28th and 29th of June at the Yellowstone Rifle Club in Billings. Thirty-four shooter showed up for the beginning round in moderately cool weather – about 70 degrees – warming up in the afternoon with the usual breezes changing to fairly stiff winds. That’s Billings. Sunday’s match was cool in the morning with some of the very finest conditions I have ever seen for a 200 yard competition at YRC. Or for any match for that matter! Surprisingly, the excellent conditions held throughout the event, and then assumed its old habits for the HV 100 in the afternoon – hot and windy. We all had a good time, though, and managed to get most of the bullets on the paper. The match was very hotly contested and the final outcome was anyone’s guess right up to the posting of the 2- Gun standings. As you can see, Rich Carpenter hauled a whole season’s worth of wood back to Wyoming, much to the dismay of us redneck Montanans. We hope to recapture some lost glory by hauling copious amounts of Wyoming wood back to Montana at Cody's Cowboy Classic. That’s the plan, at least.
Another bright spot, at least in my book, was the barbecue on Saturday night with some of that good 100% Angus beef you’ve heard so much about on the Hardee’s ads. Courtesy of John and Patsy Donnelly from the plains of Easter Montana. The Donnellys have been awfully kind to us in the meat department, having brought buffalo burger to one of the matches. All of us thank you for the good vittles and for your generosity. A tip of the YRC hat to the Donnellys!
Thanks to the target and scoring crews and to Rob Seelye who ran a very efficient match on Sunday. My only criticism was that the target crew changed the targets during the lulls and we had to shoot in the gales. What’s the deal?
