NRA APPROVED HIGH POWER MATCH

Billings June 5, 2005
After a week of intermittent rain by, what some might call, divine intervention the skies cleared and the sun came out for two great days of shooting.  Monday, the rain returned.
23 competitors shot the 800 point match.  Match winner was Sam Chopping, Casper with 787-25X.  Other winners were:
1st Master – Rick Torbert, Joliet – 766-22X
1st Expert – Aaron Clark, Billings – 734-14X
1st Sharpshooter – Dale Lacher, Billings – 670-2X

The next Approved match is scheduled for August  7th.

MR&PA “FUN” HIGH POWER MATCH VINTAGE MILITARY RIFLES

Clyde Byerly, Great Falls, conducted this match at Yellowstone Rifle Club in Billings.  The match was held due to the current interest in shooting obsolete military rifles.  There were two categories:  vintage military bolt action rifles and vintage semi-automatic rifles.  The cut-off date for allowable firearms was 1956 and the rifles could be foreign as well as U.S.
Clyde reported that he had recently shot in a vintage rifle match in Utah that attracted 46 shooters.  He says that there is currently a big interest in this event through-out the United States.
All firing was shot from the 200 yard line. Stage 1 was 5 sighter shots and 20 shots slow fire prone. Stage 2 was 10 shots rapid fire prone. Stage 3 was 10 shots rapid fire sitting and Stage 4 was 10 shots slow fire standing.
14 competitors participated in the match.  After a week of rain and cool weather, the shooters got lucky -blue skies with a few clouds and a fairly warm temperature.  Of course it can’t be all perfect. There had to be wind to challenge the shooters.
Bragging rights goes to Doug Duff, Billings in the bolt class with a score of 470-0X and to Rick Torbert, Joiet in the semi-auto class with a score of 472-9X.
There is a possibility that we will have another match in August.   Feel free to call or email me for an update.

First 2005 Approved High Power Match at Yellowstone Rifle Club, Billings

May 1, 2005

The morning started out awfully cold.  One competitor said that it was 29 degrees; another said that it was 34 degrees.  With a slight wind blowing, it was cold any way you looked at it.  Nevertheless, fourteen shooters braved it even though they couldn't feel their finger on the trigger at times.  The sun came out later in the day but it was never a "heat wave".  Me, I had a great time.....inside of the clubhouse tending the fire and crunching numbers!

The overall match winner was Rick Torbert of Fromberg with an aggregate score of 768-22X.  The next nearest competitor was George Waldorf of Dillon coming in first in the Master class with a score of 761-16X.  Second place Master went to John DiIorio of Casper, Wyoming with 747-12X. The Expert and Sharpshooter class was combined because of having just one Sharpshooter.  Guess what?  The Sharpshooter, Dale Lacher of Billings, took first place in that combined class with a score of 715-4X. Second place went to Jim Sausoman, Billings with 708-8X.

The next matches at Yellowstone Rifle Club are June 4 and 5.  On June 4th, there is going to be a "Fun" match sponsored by YRC and the Montana Rifle and Pistol Association.  This match is being held due to the current interest in shooting obsolete military rifles.  There will be two categories: vintage military bolt action rifles and vintage semi automatic rifles.   For more information call:  Clyde Byerly at 406-454-3677 or musketshooter@bresnan.net  The regular approved high power match will be conducted Sunday June 5th.  Firing commences at 0800.
